Josei giin 女性議員 - Female Members of Parliament
(March 25th 2025)
The new German Bundestag is being constituted today. With 32% the proportion of women is more than 2% lower than in the previous parliament.
But what about the proportion of women in the Japanese Diet?
In the last elections in October 2024, a record 73 women were elected to the lower house, representing about 16% of all members. This is, however, well below the global average of 27% and puts Japan in 163rd place in the IPU (Inter-Parliamentay Union) country rankings (https://data.ipu.org/women-ranking/?date_year=2025&date_month=02).
The situation is slightly rosier in Japan's upper house, or House of Councillors, where 25% of all members are women. This is also an all-time high.
It will be interesting to see whether the trend towards more female parliamentarians in Japan will continue in the next upper house elections in July 2025.
